Perhaps you recall me writing in the past about Circle C stories and Andi Carter? I really liked those stories, and I thought something similar for boys would be great too. I was excited for the opportunity to check out the Goldtown Adventures from the same author, Susan K. Marlow, to find out if she'd created another great series. The short answer is YES.
The two books I received for my latest Kregel Blog Tour review Canyon of Danger are about twelve-year-old Jem Coulter. In Canyon of Danger Jem's father, the sheriff, leaves the ranch in Jem's care while he travels to escort a prisoner. Jem is incredibly excited to be the "man of the family" for those two weeks. Unfortunately things don't go quite as smoothly as he anticipated. Aunt Rose, his sister Ellie, the cattle and more keep him plenty busy. First there is the wolf that threatens the cattle. Next is the trespasser Rafe who accidentally gets shot. And then Jem's horse Copper disappears while getting the doctor, and ... This story is a quick and easy read geared to ages 8-12. Any boy reading this fun book will be on the edge of his seat waiting for the next problem to see what Jem might do. I don't want to leak too much of the story, but I will say that Jem is one brave kid to take on the challenges he encounters. There's a lot more going on than Jem realizes.
This story is set during the 1864, a time when Pony Express riders were running mail to Sacramento, California. You'll want to visit the website mentioned above if you're interested in finding out more.
(Study Guides, Lapbooks, and Gold Stories are available as well as Illustrations which may be used as coloring pages.
The next book of the Goldtown Adventures, River of Peril, is about Jem's trip to Sacramento. As if the traveling so far isn't enough, their stagecoach gets held up. Jem's trip takes him on an adventure checking out a smuggling operation, paddle-wheel steamboats, and finding out about gold fever and the Knights of the Golden Circle in California in 1864. His sister Ellie ends up missing and things snowball from there. It's another edge of your seat, waiting for the next surprise, type of story that this great author has created.
Both books are delightful to read. I like that Marlow's books give her readers a taste of history within the stories. She has definitely created another great series. If you have younger boys you'll want to check these out.
