I recently received a copy of the wonderful May 2012 issue of the new magazine Homeschool Horizons from one of the publishers.  What a pleasant and refreshing surprise when it arrived.  I love this new magazine!  The copy I received is about “Celebrating Canada”, but the magazine is not always geared to specifically Canadian topics.  There are many topics of interest to all homeschoolers including:
  •          Enabling, A Positive Twist on a Negative Word
  •          The Frugal Homeschool:  Free is a Magic Word
  •          Fibre Arts: Weaving Works!
  •          Confrontation: Nine Things I’ve Learned
  •          Our Homeschool Bakery: Delicious Learning in Our Homeschool
  •          The Periodic Table is for Children – and I Can Prove It!
  •          Home Sweet High School
  •          Keeping History Relevant
This special issue also contains articles  written especially for Canadian families including:
  •          Raising Canadians
  •          Proud to Be Canadian
  •          The Unapologetic Canadian
  •          Celebrating Canadian Citizenship
Having read from cover to cover, I can say without reservation that I enjoyed the writing of all 18 contributors in this issue.  The articles are relevant, informative, helpful and very encouraging.  This isn’t one of those glossy, colorful magazines with 1000 gorgeous pictures and very little content.  Black, white, gray and red dominate here and easy-to-read type.  The articles are 1 to 2 pages long.  There is some advertising, but not so much as to be overwhelming. This issue even contained a  game where you find a certain number of maple leaves scattered throughout the articles. I also enjoyed a column called Letters From Home – A Glimpse Into Homeschools Across Canada – a bit of a reality check which gives you a peek into  the life of a real homeschooling family.

I’ve read a lot of homeschooling magazines over the last 10 years, and I have to say that this is one of the better ones I’ve seen.  Great job Tony, Shannon and all the writers!  Now, to just figure out how to work this one into the budget too –shh, don’t tell the hubby!

By the way, I received this issue free from the publisher to check it out for a possible review.  I did not and will not receive further compensation.  This review contains my honest opinion and observations.  I was not obligated to provide a review, nor was I obligated to provide a positive review.  I just really liked this one and wanted to share it with my readers.  Check it out!

Thank you Roberta! I'm glad you liked the magazine!!! We work hard at putting it together, and pray it fills a need in the community.

As writer of the homeschool bakery article, I'm thrilled that you enjoyed your first issue! (I'm still waiting for mine... :-P)
I'm absolutely thrilled that we now have such a high-quality print resource here in Canada. Who needs another website? (no offense to you, or me, or anyone else who blogs!) There's something really special about a magazine on paper...
