Recently I received a free copy of Trouble in Ippy-Tippy Town, a new offering from Life Sentence Publishing, for review purposes. It is written by Katie Berdan, a writer and musician from Wisconsin. It features delightful illustrations created by Monica Bruenjes. The
book is a quick read with an interesting message.
There's trouble in Ippy-Tippy Town. This town of turtles is full of Wanna Workers, Schloppy Shluffers that appear to be sloths, and Gimmee Getters. The story describes what happens when the Gimmee Getters are elected into leadership over the Land of Opportunity. The hardworking Wanna Workers that are just trying to earn a living, outnumbered by those who want to get things free, a.k.a. the Gimme Getters, end up very frustrated. The Gimmee Getters eventually figure out that getting everything free is not necessarily the best situation for everyone since someone eventually has to work for things to exist and be available.
This is a short but important story with a lesson that children should definitely learn. It has catchy names, cute characters, and fun illustrations. The story seems geared to a bit older crowd than the book would suggest by appearance. My 9 year old child was fascinated by the pictures and fun aspects of the book but not terribly excited by the story. Perhaps the ideas were a little too deep for him or he expected a "fun" story, but this was not an instant favorite for my book lover. We'll try this one again when he is a bit older. Even though the book was not a hit with my child, I did like the book. I'm curious to see if other Ippy-Tippy Town stories might capture his attention a bit more.
