Lately I've been checking out the Evangelism Study Bible as part of a Kregel Blog Tour.  I've really enjoyed the extras included in this Bible.  There is an extensive list of features included in the beginning which is quite handy in finding pertinent sections regarding evangelism in each book of the Bible.
Some of the topics covered include:

  • Holy Matrimony
  • Alternative Lifestyles
  • How to Answer Non-Christians Who Struggle over Corrupt Church Leaders
  • How to Respond to People Who Say "Churches Only Want Money"
  • How to Respond to Those Who Say Christianity Takes the Fun Out of Life
  • How to Keep From Offending People in Evangelism
  • How to Answer Those Who Say Christians are Hypocrites
  • How to Share Christ with a Cult Member Who Knocks on Your Door

and many other relevant topics.  Coverage of these topics is brief, helpful, and effective.  Each topic includes mention of relevant scripture sections as well as discussion and helpful ideas to tackle tough questions.

Helpful resources in The Evangelism Study Bible include:

  • Introductions to each book of the Bible which focus on evangelistic themes
  • More than 2000 study notes
  • Over 260 tips on issues in evangelism
  • 125 articles on various issues
  • 85 how-to features which contain hands-on advice
  • 45 devotions
  • Double-column format and explanatory notes
  • Cross references
  • Concordance
  • Colorful maps

EvanTell, Inc., an evangelism training and outreach ministry based in Texas provides evangelism materials, training, and outreach events.  This Bible combines their tools with an easy-to-read, understandable version of scripture.

I think this is an excellent study Bible that makes it easy for almost anyone to share the gospel with those around them.  Having used a number of different study Bibles, I think this is definitely one of the best I've checked out.  If you're looking for answers to tough questions and a bit of fresh perspective this is a great one to check out!

As always, opinions and comments in this review are my own.  I was not obligated to provide a positive review.

NKJV Study Bible - Full Color Edition Review - BookLook Bloggers Review

New King James Version Study Bible
2nd Edition, Full Color Edition
Thomas Nelson Publishers

Lately I've gotten a number of books to read and review.  One of these is the NKJV Study Bible, the full color edition.  Along with familiar Old and New Testament Biblical text, this Bible contains numerous cross-references, annotations, book introductions and outlines, time lines, articles, Bible Times and Culture Notes, word studies, maps, teachings and illustrations of Christ, prophecies of the Messiah fulfilled in Jesus Christ, center column notes, a subject index, a concordance and much more.  There are also color pictures and highlighting to emphasize significant sections and information.  There is even an attached ribbon bookmark to save your place for your next reading.

I received a complimentary copy of this Bible from the BookLook Bloggers Program, in the hope that I would write an honest review of it.  I'm not obligated to provide a positive review, but I did like this one.  I didn't and won't receive further compensation, but keep reading to find out why I think you might want to check out this option if you're doing some serious studying of the Bible.  By the way, the opinions and comments shared are my own.  (Just a little FTC notice.)

So what did I think of this one?  Well, since I have a number of versions and varieties of Bibles, I was really excited to check out the extra features in this one.  I love having the center notes, annotations and concordance all in the same book.  It's wonderful to understand more of what I'm reading and compare and contrast other references.  This Bible is easy to read, and makes the content quite understandable.  It's been interesting to get a bit more the background of the sections I'm reading.   I'm a book nerd at heart, and the wealth of information in this study Bible makes me smile!  The only downside to this Bible was the weight. (I've heard of Bible thumpers, and thumping with this one would definitely be felt.)  That said, it's not unreasonably heavy for the content and hard cover.  The font even works fine for these aging eyes--a plus!  If you're looking for a good study Bible this is definitely one to consider.

You can get one here.

Hey, check out this great flap book all about The Time of Jesus.   I received this colorful book from Kregel in the hope that I'd provide a review.  Let me tell you a bit about it.  This a a sturdy board book with fun flaps for kids to peek into while finding out about what was happening during the time of Jesus' birth and life.  You children will find out about the babe's birth in a stable in Bethlehem, his childhood in Nazareth, and his travels by the shore of Lake Galilee.  They'll get to see what farm country was like, hear about the feast of a rich man, and  imagine the temple in Jerusalem.  By the time they reach the end of the book they'll also find out about the trial of Christ, his death, his burial in a garden tomb and his eventual rise to a new life.

The pictures in The Time of Jesus are colorful and richly detailed.  Major points of each story are presented allowing children to understand basic true stories.  The flaps add extra fun and pull the children into story and allow for discussion.  Your child doesn't even have to be able to read to enjoy the book and learn from it.  This is definitely a nice book and would be great as a gift for a child for Christmas or Easter.

My little guy picks up this one on occasion just to remind himself of things and converse about the stories. We really liked this book. The book sells for $14.99, which is a bit expensive, but it is definitely a book your child will be able to carry around everywhere he might  go to remind him of the stories it contains.  This is another great offering from Lion Hudson/Kregel.

99 Stories from the Bible - Another Kregel book review

99 Stories from the Bible
By Juliet David, ©2013
Illustrated by Elina Ellis

Wlkinson House, Jordan Hill Road
Oxford OX2 8DR, England
Kregel Publishing
ISBN 978-1-859858479
$14.99

Do you have young children that you'd like to tell Bible stories?  Are they too fidgety to sit still to hear the
stories of creation, Adam, Noah, and other favorites?  Perhaps you might want to try the latest Kregel book we've been spending time with.  99 Stories from the Bible by Juliet David is a beautiful 196 page hardcover book full of Old and New Testament stories including:
At the beginning A wonderful garden
Forbidden fruit Noah builds an ark
The tall tower Joseph the dreamer
God speaks to Moses A message for Mary
A baby in a stable   Wise men seek a king
To the cross!
An empty tomb!
Jesus will return,
And many more.

The stories are 1 to 2 pages in length and contain gorgeous colorful pictures. The stories are quick and easy to read--just long enough to present the story but short enough to avoid being overwhelmed with details.
This picture story book is very attractive in its presentation.
I love this book for younger children.  Although short on words, the illustrations spark plenty of related
discussion and questions.  Great job Juliet!

A Tale of Two Kingdoms/God's Unfolding Story of Salvation -- Mosaic Reviews

A Tale of Two Kingdoms
Heather A. Kendall
Guardian Books
ISBN 155452003-7
$23
Recommended age: teens and adults

As a member of the Mosaic Reviews team I've had the pleasure of reading about the history found in the Holy Scriptures regarding the story of the Kingdom of Christ and the Kingdom of Satan in A Tale of Two Kingdoms.

The author, Heather A. Kendall, is a Sunday School teacher and ladies' Bible study leader, presents the story in two parts:

Part 1: Waiting for the Promised Seed
This part of the story tells about the beginning of the war between God and Satan, the development of Satan's kingdom, the founding fathers of the faith, the establishment of Israel as a nation, King David, the Northern Kingdom of Israel, the Southern Kingdom of Judah, the fall of Judah, the captivity, a second chance for Israel, and the silent years.

Part 2: Responding to the Promised Seed
This part of the history presented tells of the birth of the promised seed, the ministry of Jesus, the early church, letters to the churches, and the apostolic fathers.  An Appendix, a Timeline of Key People and Events, Endnotes, a Bibliography, an Index and a number of Maps are also included for reference.

Part 1 explains about God's plan for creation, Satan's sin and fall from the angelic realm, Adam and Eve being sent from Paradise due to their sin, Enoch walking with God and speaking out against wickedness, Noah's righteousness and the great flood which wiped out most of the people and animals on the earth, idolatry, the Tower of Babel, and pagan sacrifices while emphasizing the consequences of sin and rebellion as well as the need for dependence on God.

This section then moves on to tell stories of the founding fathers of faith such as Abram who covenanted with God, Isaac, Moses, Jacob and King David.  Solomon, Ahab, Elijah, Jonah and the Prophets follow as well as references to the Psalms, the necessity of repentance, the forgiveness of God and the birth of the Messiah who would be the way to even out man's sins and rebellion. Heather tells about the faithfulness, grace and mercy of God while explaining that we all make choices, many of which go against God's plans.

Part 2 starts with the story of Mary and Joseph and talks about obedience to God.  Heather speaks of the birth of Jesus and the spiritual salvation available to all people through his life and death.  She tells about the ministry of Jesus and God's plan of salvation through the life, death, and the resurrection of Jesus.  Along the way in the story she shares about John the Baptist, Satan's temptation of Jesus, the necessity of spiritual birth, the Holy Spirit, heart attitudes, the Sermon on the Mount and God's invitation for people to trust him, listen, and believe to receive the promise of entrance into heaven.  Heather shares Jesus' description of the nature of God's kingdom and tells of Christ's Second Coming.

God's Unfolding Story of Salvation
The Christ-Centered Biblical Storyline

Resource Publications
Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN 978-1-62032046-4
$22

In addition to A Tale of Two Kingdoms I also received a companion book titled God's Unfolding Story of Salvation, a Bible study, which teaches believers that the Old Testament points to the coming birth of Christ and how sinful people may find redemption through this death.  The Bible study covers preparing for the birth of Christ, the prophets waiting for Christ's birth, Jesus the Promised Seed, and the church proclaiming the Promised Seed.  The study consists of 38 lessons separated into four parts.  A Timeline and Bibliography are also included.

A Tale of Two Kingdoms is a good condensed summary of many significant parts of scripture with some added insight/interpretation by the author.  I did like the short chapters with Points to Ponder (key points) placed at the end.  For a quick once over of the entire Bible and its concepts this could be a good book.  While I didn't dislike the book, it was hard for me to get into and keep going.   It is written well and is easy to follow.  I would recommend this book to someone who hasn't read much scripture to capture the big picture, but I would also mention that there is a need to keep in mind the author's interpretation may differ from their own.  I respect the author for the time, effort, and ideas she has shared with her readers.  Describing Genesis to Revelation in a relatively short book is no small task!  As for God's Unfolding Story of Salvation, the companion Bible study, I would be comfortable using these books separately or together, both individually and in a group. Both books could certainly stand on their own but do complement each other.  While recommended for teens, I personally think they are a better fit for a bit older teens with the maturity to dig in deeper.  Heather poses a lot of thoughtful questions in her study.

For more about Heather and her books visit the website.  You'll also find a free peek at A Tale of Two Kingdoms and a book trailer of God's Unfolding Story of Salvation.  Click here to order these books.  Click for some of Heather's favorite links.  Don't forget to stop by her blog too!

The Waterproof (Yes, I Really Said That!) Bible - A Mosaic Review

The Waterproof (Yes, I Really Said That!) Bible -
A Mosaic Review

My Bible - Cute huh?
At some point you've probably heard the question,
"If you were   stuck on a deserted island what is the
one thing you would want  to have with you?"
(or another variation of that type of question)  If it
were me I'd have to respond with, "Hopefully my
Bible."  It's a source of encouragement, joy, and
wisdom that I suspect I would need in that
situation.  The problem with that answer would be
that it's not very likely that I would end up in
that situation without some type of accident
or disaster happening, and if that were the case,
the last thing I'd be doing is carefully waterproofing,
wrapping and figuring out how to carry and keep
track of a book.  I've been reading for a very
long time, and I've lost, torn, and spilled on more
books than I can count on both hands.  Finally,
someone has come up with a mostly indestructible
book.  (I'll explain the "mostly" part a little later.)
Speaking for myself and the other bookworms
I know, we'll read a book almost anywhere and while doing
almost anything. Honestly, that presents very good odds that
a number of our books are not in perfect condition when
we're done reading.  When given the opportunity, as a
member of the Mosaic Reviews team, to receive a copy
of the Waterproof Bible to read and write a review, one
of my first thoughts was "Hmm, a challenge--bring
it on."  I found it quite funny that a whole team of people
would be given a book with a "dare" to try to destroy it
just to provide a review.

Before going any further, yes, the book is indeed
waterproof.  Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow ...  It just
occurred to me that my mailman might need one of
these.  Here's a bit of an explanation and description
of the great features of the Waterproof Bible.

Cola wouldn't stay on the page for camera

The creators of the Waterproof Bible wanted to make a Bible
that could be taken anywhere, regardless of the weather or
circumstances.  All Waterproof Bible products are 100%
waterproof inside and out. The books are made using 100%
synthetic materials (plastic).  These Bibles float, are stain
resistant, and do not bleed through when using ballpoint
ink or dry highlighters. The books are very durable and can
even be recycled.

In the About This Bible section at the front the Bible is the
following:

"The WATERPROOF BIBLE is printed on 100% plastic.
This material is both waterproof and tear-resistant with
normal use.  This material is adversely affected by
temperatures above 150° F.  If the WATERPROOF BIBLE
freezes while wet, thaw before opening.  This durable
format can be dried with a towel or by standing it on the
spine with the pages up.  Water will cause the pages to
adhere to one another, but once dry, they will return to
their original condition.  Petroleum products can cause
the ink of the WATERPROOF BIBLE to smear, so keep it
away from all such products, including bug spray."

Other notable points include that the Waterproof Bible is
available in NKJV, NIV, ESV, NLT and KJV.  The books
are available in a complete form containing the Old and New
Testaments or in a New Testament plus Proverbs and Psalms
form.  The pages are much stronger than paper and even
stretch before tearing.  Ball point pens, pencils and dry
highlighters may be used if you choose to write in the books.
If you're interested in purchasing the Bibles for a particular
group or want one customized for yourself or a gift that is
also possible.

Bardin & Marsee Publishing also partners with individuals
and ministries who desire to send out Waterproof Bibles
where they are needed.  Visit the website here to find out
more about ministries you might be able to help.  People
who have been through hurricanes, tornadoes and other
natural disasters have been recipients as well as homeless
people and ministries in other countries.

It really floats!

I really love that this book can go through life's storms, literally.
I tried rubbing lotion on a small area of print.  We've tried cola
and water through the pages  We've soaked and floated this
Bible.  I'm happy to say that none of these had any effect on
the pages or the print.  Everything seems to just rinse off, run
off, wipe off and go away.  My Bible is still in great condition,
as if it had never been used.  I love the compact version that I
received.  It's handy to stick in my purse or computer bag while
I'm out and about.  For those who might be wondering, I
compared the pricing with that of comparable Bibles which are
not waterproof.  The pricing is very close to the same.  There
are also sales which bring the prices down.  You can even get
accessories to go with your Bible such as Waterproof Bible
Jackets, sketchbooks, journals, pens, highlighters, a magnifier,
index tabs and that hat you see below.

These items are currently on the website as clearance specials.

Thanks Bardin & Marsee for putting out such a great product!

God Helps Me Bible - Book Review - Kregel

God Helps Me Bible

Juliet David

Kregel Publications
PO Box 2607, Grand Rapids, MI 49501
Price 12.99 US/£7.99 UK

Age grade: 3+
103 pages
ISBN 978-1-85985-916-2

I recently received a nice Bible for young children from Kregel Publications to review.  It's really quite a good one if you have a child around three to five years of age.  Let me tell you a bit about it.

The God Helps Me Bible is a colorfully illustrated Bible for very young children.  It has a protected spiral binding that allows the book to lay flat and is easy carrying size for little hands. The pages are heavy enough that even my wild child can't tear them.  In addition, Clare Caddy has filled the stories with child-friendly illustrations with just the right details to capture any child's attention. (The illustrations are similar to the cover pictured above.)
The God Helps Me Bible presents a retelling of twenty-five Bible stories using simple words and concepts.  The stories contained include favorites such as:
Noah and His Great Ark, Joseph Explains a Dream, Moses Rescues His People, David Defeats a Giant, Daniel is Saved from Lions, The Very Hungry Crowd and a Tiny Man Meets Jesus.  At the end of each story the author points out how God helped the main character.  There is a also a Bible reference at the end of each story for parents to refer to in their own Bible for "the rest of the story".  In these stories your child will see that God loves and helps his world and people.

This is a great read-aloud for little kids.  I like the ability to open the book flat to point to details in the pictures while reading.  There is just enough story for the children to understand but not so much that they are overwhelmed and forget the details.  Although we did not use it as such, I think this could easily be used to introduce a "devotion/study" time to your children.  The Bible reference could be read and studied by the parent before reading to your child.  We enjoyed this book and will probably put this one in our bag to take to church.

I received this book free from Kregel to provide this review.  I did not and will not receive further compensation.  Thoughts and comments are my own.  I am not obligated to provide a positive review, but I did enjoy this book.

Hear Any Good Stories Lately?

The World's Greatest Stories
Told by George W. Sarris

For more information or to purchase:
www.WorldsGreatestStories.com

1-888-STORIES

Ages 4-adult
$7.95 per volume
We've been listening to some dramatic presentations of Bible stories lately.  Let me tell you about them.  As a member of the TOS Review Crew I received a CD of Volume 1 - The Prophets from The World's Greatest Stories in order to provide this review.

Unlike fictional stories, the characters and events of Bible stories found in this series are taken directly, word for word, from the Bible and told using a dramatic storyteller, music and sound effects.  George Sarris present a very dramatic version of each story--constantly changing voices and accents as the characters interact with each other.  The current series contains a total of 18 individual stories on 5 CDs or cassettes.  The stories are presented in either the King James Version or New International Version.  Each volume is about 1 hour long.

Here's what you'll find in each volume:
  • Volume 1 - The Prophets (The Blazing Furnace, The Handwriting on the Wall, Daniel in the Lion's Den, Elijah and the Prophets of Baal, The Prophecy of Jonah)
  • Volume 2 - The Life of Christ (The Real Story of Christmas, The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus, The Healing of the Blind Man, Things Jesus Said and Did, The Real Story of Easter
  • Volume 3 - Beginnings (In the Beginning, A Lame Man in Lystra, A Jailer in Philippi, The Story of Ruth, The Raising of Lazarus)
  • Volume 4 - Joshua and Esther (The Battle of Jericho, The Book of Esther)
  • Volume 5 - Joseph and His Brothers (Joseph and His Brothers)
  • **New** Volume 6 - Defeating Giants (David and Goliath, Namaan the Leper, Micaiah the Prophet and Jehoshaphat the King, The Sacrifice of Isaac, Gideon and His 300 Men)
What did we think?

When I found out we'd be listening to the Prophets CD I was very interested to see whether these would be good to help my kids learn and remember some important Bible stories.

First, the suggested ages--not so sure on this one.  Although stated to be for ages 4 to adult, these stories seemed a bit too dramatized and quick moving for age 4.  I think 6-8 years old would be the youngest I would expose to these stories.  My 6 year old listened, but honestly, these just moved too fast for him.  My 14 year old thought the stories were actually not too bad, but she didn't care to listen for very long at a time.

Next, the dramatization--the storytelling was good, but it didn't feel like direct from the Bible while listening.  I personally felt distracted by the dramatization (like it was a bit too much) and found myself thinking about the voices, etc. instead of getting a good understanding of the story.  I think these CDs would be a good listening choice in short spurts in the car, for personal/family devotions or bedtime listening.  I don't know if we'll purchase any other volumes, but the CDs are good - just not quite the right fit for us at this time.  Mr. Sarris did a very good job of dramatization/narration.  I admire him for the time and effort put into these CDs.  I would definitely consider getting these as gifts for friends who like to listen to dramatized stories.

Last, the price is quite reasonable for the content found on the CDs.  Another thing to
keep in mind if you find that you like these stories--there is free shipping if you order 6 or more items!

The CDs would probably rate a 7 of 10 at our house--a thumbs up product.

You can listen to samples by going to links on the website.

Check here to see what other TOS Crew members thought of these stories.

Disclaimer:  As a member of the TOS Review Crew I received a free copy of the above-mentioned CD in order to provide this review.  I did not and will not receive further compensation.  Thoughts, comments and opinions expressed here are my own.  I am not obligated to provide a positive review.

Theo Presents - Check Out This New Animated Series to Teach Kids Theology - DVD Review & Giveaway

Theo Presents
www.theopresents.com

2011 Whitestone Media of Burbank, CA

I recently received a free copy of the the new Theo Presents DVD to watch with my family in the hope that I would provide a review on this blog.  This DVD is great!  Let me share a bit about it with you.

This is a fun animated series centered around the adventures and teachings of the main character, Theo (animated theologian), a student of Godʼs Word. Theo lives in an English village, in the heart of the Cotswolds, and entertains many guests, including two mice, Belfry and Luther -- one on the larger side and one skinnier.

The series guides children and adults through a systematic study of theology.  Sin, God's character, the Bible, salvation and godly living are some of the doctrines presented with easy-to-understand illustrations. These stories are cute, funny and wonderfully animated. Belfry and Luther help viewers learn about the Gospel of the Christian faith. This multi-media resource includes a DVD series, curriculum, books and iPhone/iPad app. This DVD is great for kids of all ages and can be used for Sunday school lessons, Christian school curriculum, missions, evangelism and homeschooling.

This great educational series was created by Michael Joens, a producer and director of animated commercials and producer/director of McGee & Me and Adventures In Odyssey for Focus on the Family. Mr. Joens' hope is that God uses Theo to present the Gospel message all over the world.

I received a copy of this DVD to watch with my family to provide an honest review. I have to say that the DVD was short, but filled with excellent information. My 6 year old loved it! As soon as it was done he asked if he could watch more. When he was told that it was done he asked if we could start it again. He watched it 4 times in 2 days--each time soaking in the Gospel message. He still keeps asking for it!  The whole family really likes this DVD!  We loved the mice characters. I really liked the animation in the DVD--fun but not overly silly.

Here's a short note about the episodes (as shown at www.theopresents.com):

Episode One: Saving Faith
9 minutes

Meet Theo, a kind English gentleman who knows a lot about the truths of God's word. Theo is a theologian, and in this episode he teaches us what it means to have faith. There are many things people can believe in, but not all things are faith-worthy. To illustrate a life dedicated to believing in the right thing, Theo shares the example of Abraham. The Lord had favor with Abraham, and because of his faith he was greatly blessed.

Bonus Episode: Good News - Free
5 minutes
In this bonus episode, Theo shares the good news – the gospel. He explains that we all fall short because of a problem called sin. All human beings have sinned and are in desperate need of a Savior. Jesus Christ is the Savior that came to redeem mankind from our sin which separates us from God. We must accept this free gift of salvation in order to have eternal life.
Episode Two: Loving Obedience
9 minutes

Luther and Belfry are two field mice that have befriended Theo, and really want to please him. They usually get mixed up in all sorts of mischief where ever they go. In this episode, Theo tries to instruct the young lads in obedience, and uses the story of Jonah to illustrate the consequences of disobedience, but also to show the many blessings that come when we obey.
Episode Three: Forgiveness
10 minutes
Forgiveness is not an easy thing to do, especially for Luther and Belfry. Theo tries to help his little furry friends understand what it means to forgive and why it’s so important. Theo shares the parable of the “Unforgiving Servant”, and how that story is such a great example of why forgiveness is a special act of love that Christians should show one another,

God's Love contains the first three Theo episodes in a single volume. Episode 1: Saving Faith. Episode 2: Loving Obedience. Episode 3: Forgiveness.

Total Running Time:  28 minutes
